My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There are few, very few, books that let me at 'squeeee level'. Well, cough, this is one of them.

In Jane Yellowrock's New Orleans, the European Vamps have finally arrived. (well, funny factor here - Anita Blake old times nostalgia aside- they really arrived). As you can expect, bad-bad things occur almost simultaneously. There is a ton of action-packed scenes.

I'm really impresed when authors can show they thought their books way ahead; and the argumental arcs converged to leave you impressed.

1) Cherokee rituals.

2) Magiks, and angels, and scheming vampires, onorios, primos, emperors, and witches, and dragons, and Beast, and storms and rain.

3) And Alex and Eli:
I looked out into the living room. “I was thinking you could find and replace the fireplaces with gas ones.”
“No. Wood,” Alex said. “That way, when the zombie apocalypse comes we can have wood fire for heating and cooking.”
“When the apocalypse comes,” Eli corrected, “we’ll grab gobags and head for the hills. Some little holler Janie tells us about.”

3) Jane hit RickyBo.

4) Jane defends her love.

Blurb: “You must wait here,” the Highest of the High Priests told her. “We will return and bring you back to the Land of Nibiru once we have found the circlet to place upon your head.” The very mention of the circlet made the High Priest tremble with joy. Though the journey through the portal had been brief, the Land of Nibiru was many universes away from where Corrina now stood—in her own small kitchen, in her own small house.

I was reading some fic today, in there the so called 'wise man' choose some person to be 'the special'. The thing is, that person believes him, but then too believe him in what can do o *not* can do. Well, people, is better that you listen more to yourself.

Even when those dreams get . . . deferred somehow.

“Where did you learn this stuff?” her father said.
Corrina shrugged. “Books,” she said. [...] She didn’t tell him about the thrill she felt when she first held a sword in her hand, first felt that honed edge slice the air in front of her. She didn’t tell him how good—how very, very good—it felt to be *dangerous*.
“Books, eh?” Her father chuckled. “Well, that’s something. I had no idea books were so dangerous.”
The word thrilled her to the core.

BLURB: The state took Aphra away from Innsmouth. They took her history, her home, her family, her god. They tried to take the sea. Now, years later, when she is just beginning to rebuild a life, an agent of that government intrudes on her life again, with an offer she wishes she could refuse. "The Litany of Earth" is a dark fantasy story inspired by the Lovecraft mythos.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

My shelves: dark-urban-fantasy, short-story, novelette-short, situ-1940s
Recommended for: Cthulhu fans

The people of the water are born in shadow on the land, but what they make beneath the waves will live in glory till the dying sun burns away their last shelter.

Aphra Marsh is a survivor of interment camp. Her old town was Innsmouth.

For you, o not versed, Innsmouth is a fictional place of Lovecraftian horror. ( The Shadow Over Innsmouth )

More than a short story this is a sneek peak into the book of this author - Winter Tide . Takes place in the 1940s, after the war. Emrys (really??) narrate with Aphra, the other side of the people persecuted and stripped of family, legacy and religion. She is an Old Deep hybrid, with head down she lives following lost threads when able. Her tranquility is once more shattered when one man, Spector, ask her help with ... other people. Now, she is bitter, but then curious.

I'm not really sure how I feel about the comparation between the religion persecuted and culture persecuted and ... I don't know ...satanist? aliens pagans with human sacrifices? Actually, I do mind. But it's interesting.

The ending of this story -see here -is a bit weak. But I'm curious enough to look for the book.

BLURB: In the sordid streets of Victorian London, unwanted desire flares between two bitter enemies brought together by a deadly secret.
Crusading journalist Nathaniel Roy is determined to expose spiritualists who exploit the grief of bereaved and vulnerable people. First on his list is the so-called Seer of London, Justin Lazarus. Nathaniel expects him to be a cheap, heartless fr fraud. He doesn’t expect to meet a man with a sinful smile and the eyes of a fallen angel—or that a shameless swindler will spark his desires for the first time in years.
Justin feels no remorse for the lies he spins during his séances. His gullible clients simply bore him. Hostile, disbelieving, utterly irresistible Nathaniel is a fascinating challenge. And as their battle of wills and wits heats up, Justin finds he can’t stop thinking about the man who’s determined to ruin him.But Justin and Nathaniel are linked by more than their fast-growing obsession with one another. They are both caught up in an aristocratic family’s secrets, and Justin holds information that could be lethal. As killers, fanatics, and fog close in, Nathaniel is the only man Justin can trust—and, perhaps, the only man he could love.

Not as I was expecting. Seriously tempted to put just 2 stars to this book.

Journalist seeks to unmask a medium in Victorian London, the plot is complicated in a tangle of questioning for an inheritance.

Strangely, during the narration of the séance, I keep thinking in Houdini and his own obsession with spiritualism.

My problem with this book is that Nathaniel Roy -the journalist and former lawyer- is an uncharitable character, from a priveleged upbringing , he has never suffered hunger or despair to do everything to survive, but he feels with the right to judge others. In another hand, Justin Lazarus, the subject that deceives those who 'want to be deceived', is a character of gray morality, much more understandable; and I could sympathize with him.

The vision of London wrapped in a tangible fog where Justin manages to navigate is not very subtle, but convincing. I think they are not the type of couple that you expect to stay together for a long time, not with the way Nathaniel thinks.

Reseña: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (poesia)

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

22 pages
(first published 1798)
BLURB: The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner is a hauntingly beautiful work, acclaimed both for the lyrical quality of its language and for the ghostly atmosphere it evokes. Samuel Taylor Coleridge's masterpiece related the tale of a sailor who shoots a lucky albatross and is condemned to wander the sea in search of redemption, burdened with guilt over his deed and the resulting deaths of his shipmates.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An orphan's curse would drag to hell
A spirit from on high;
But oh! more horrible than that
Is the curse in a dead man's eye!

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

5 pages
(first published 1816)
BLURB:  Christabel is a long narrative poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in two parts.

The story of Christabel concerns a central female character of the same name and her encounter with a stranger called Geraldine, who claims to have been abducted from her home by a band of rough men. Christabel pities her and takes her home with her; supernatural signs seem to indicate that not all is well.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

And Christabel awoke and spied
The same who lay down by her side—
O rather say, the same whom she
Raised up beneath the old oak tree!
Nay, fairer yet! and yet more fair!
For she belike hath drunken deep
Of all the blessedness of sleep!

BLURB: Ava is having a rough time. Getting rid of Venus didn’t set her free—she’s still part of the magical mafia called the Coterie. Her new boss seems like an improvement, but who knows if he’ll stay that way—the Coterie life changes people. And since Ava’s currently avoiding her friends after (disastrously) turning down a date with Lock, well, everything kind of sucks. And that’s not even taking into account the feelings she might have for him.

But when a mysterious illness starts to affect magical beings, it’s up to Ava and her team to stop its spread…or else one of them might be next.

My rating: 2.75 melting stars

When freeware network seems to put people really nervous.

Tsuyoshi Shimizu is living content with his pregnant wife and small business , when a errand takes a twist .

Tsuyoshi blinked. “I’m just living my life.”
“Well, your network gift economy is undermining the lawful, government approved, regulated economy!”
“Well,” Tsuyoshi said gently, “maybe my economy is better than your economy.”
“Says who?” she scoffed. “Why would anyone think that?”
“It’s better because we’re happier than you are. What’s wrong with acts of kindness? Everyone likes gifts.

Published January 24th 2017 by Harper Voyager Impulse (first published June 17th 2011)

Languaje: English

BLURB: Both familiar and fantastic, Clark T. Carlton’s Prophets of the Ghost Ants explores a world in which food, weapons, clothing, art—even religious beliefs—are derived from Humankind’s profound intertwining with the insect world.
In a savage landscape where humans have evolved to the size of insects, they cannot hope to dominate. Ceaselessly, humans are stalked by night wasps, lair spiders, and marauder fleas. And just as sinister, men are still men. Corrupt elites ruthlessly enforce a rigid caste system. Duplicitous clergymen and power-mongering royalty wage pointless wars for their own glory. Fantasies of a better life and a better world serve only to torment those who dare to dream.

One so tormented is a half-breed slave named Anand, a dung-collector who has known nothing but squalor and abuse. Anand wants to lead his people against a genocidal army who fight atop fearsome, translucent Ghost Ants. But to his horror, Anand learns this merciless enemy is led by someone from his own family: a religious zealot bent on the conversion of all non-believers . . . or their extermination.

A mix of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Shadow of the Apt, Katherine Addison’s The Goblin Emperor, and Phillip Pullman’s Golden Compass, this is a powerful new addition to the genre.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

{Note: If you are squeamish about bugs and eating bugs, this is so not your book ;P}

BLURB: Pearl Buck’s 1931 Pulitzer Prize–winning classic about the rise and fall of Chinese villagers before World War I comes to life in this graphic novel by Nick Bertozzi.

In The Good Earth, Pearl S. Buck paints an indelible portrait of China in the 1920s, when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings. This story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-Lan is must reading to fully appreciate the sweeping changes that have occurred in the lives of the Chinese people during the last century.

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

[Please note that my rating refers only to this edition.]

Wang Lung is a poor peasant in China between wars, the story begins with his marriage to a poor slave of a rich house - O-Lan -, and continues through three generations in his fight against poverty, hunger, droughts and plagues , meanwhile a revolution is mentioned in the background. O-Lan and Wang Lung work very hard on their lands, and their efforts bear fruit although he never values his wife much in spite of being essentially a fairly good and honest man, which is seen especially at the end.

I had read this novel many years ago, it was among the books in my house and I remembered it with some nostalgia, so I required this book out of curiosity. I do not know where this fashion came from introducing great classics as graphic novels, but in this case the format frankly does not do justice to this tremendous classic.

BLURB: Trapped on a planet millions of light years away from Earth, five scientists must survive sub-zero temperatures and horrific alien creatures as they make their way across the dead, frozen landscape to their base in this action-packed graphic novel. It is the age of space exploration, and five scientists travel 80 million light years from home to study the planet of Siberia, the location of Earth’s 56th colony. Completely covered with dense snow and steep mountains, Siberia’s poles reach temperatures of -300° F with icy winds of close to 200 mph.
After their shuttle crashes, the surviving scientists must walk across hundreds of miles of frozen wasteland to find the terrain basecamp. Between the biting cold, devastating snow storms, and horrific alien creatures, their chances of survival are close to absolute zero. In Siberia 56, author Christophe Bc imagines a hostile and fascinating world that harkens to the very best of the science fiction and horror genres. Superbly illustrated by Alexis Sentenac, this stunning work offers a chilling tale of survival in the vast recesses of a dying planet.

My rating: 2.75 frozen hopeless stars

Siberia 56 is the name of the 58th colony of Earth, or maybe I have to say hope-to-be colony. For many years expeditions have struggle against a very hostil ambient trying to setle there. The story start with the last crew -the number 13- in the first volume, the replacement after eight years.

Do you remember those science fiction/horror films where they send an expeditionary group to colonize or exploit a planet that is tremendously inhospitable and there are very dangeorus creatures?

The idea is not very original.

El diente roto

Pedro Emilio Coll

Año de Publicación: 1890

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Spoilers menores , quedan advertidos.

Mortals fantasized that love was eternal and its loss unimaginable. Now we know that neither is true. Love remained mortal, while we became eternal.

So Alana, Marko an Hazel ends with a ride on a comet -Phang -, site of war conflict over fuel.... mmmm.

A few years back, the powers that be would always outsource whatever wetwork needed doing...
...but these days, both sides are more than happy to get their own hands dirty.
I mean, the average schmuch on the street doesn't care what nightmares his leaders are green-lightning anymore, right? All he's thinking about is his next vacation

Overall boring, almost no plot, and oh shocking oh - wars are bad.

The covers are neat, though.
