BLURB: Schoolyard rivalries. Baking disasters. Puffed sleeves. Explore the violet vales and glorious green of Avonlea in this spirited adaptation.

The magic of L.M. Montgomery’s treasured classic is reimagined in a whimsically-illustrated graphic novel adaptation perfect for newcomers and kindred spirits alike. When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan who can help manage their family farm, they have no idea what delightful trouble awaits them. With flame-red hair and an unstoppable imagination, 11-year-old Anne Shirley takes Green Gables by storm.

Anne’s misadventures bring a little romance to the lives of everyone she meets: her bosom friend, Diana Barry; the town gossip, Mrs. Lynde; and that infuriating tease, Gilbert Blythe. From triumphs and thrills to the depths of despair, Anne turns each everyday moment into something extraordinary.

My rating: 3.5 kindred stars

My shelves: netgalley, book-to-graphic-novel, graphic-novel, classics,  coming-of-age, situ-1870s

The story about the orphan girl going to live to Avonlea has become a beloved classical . Her long dialogues full of hyperbolic wonder -and despair- and her life with the Cuthber siblings in a small community in Prince Edward are a delight to read.

In this adaptation of the novel as graphic novel we see moments of great success, and others in which the continuity is lost.

“They become magic,” he said with a smile.

BLURB; Gertrude Hunt, the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, is glad to have you. We cater to particular kind of guests, the ones most people don’t know about. The older lady sipping her Mello Yello is called Caldenia, although she prefers Your Grace. She has a sizable bounty on her head, so if you hear kinetic or laser fire, try not to stand close to the target. Our chef is a Quillonian. The claws are a little unsettling, but he is a consummate professional and truly is the best chef in the Galaxy. If you see a dark shadow in the orchard late at night, don’t worry. Someone is patrolling the grounds. Do beware of our dog.Your safety and comfort is our first priority. The inn and your host, Dina Demille, will defend you at all costs. We ask only that you mind other guests and conduct yourself in a polite manner.

My rating: 3.5 vortex stars

The reception of a new guest in Gertrude Hunt , the interstellar inn, bring another set of big problems and pain to Dina Demille, her loved ones, and maybe even more.

Even though this is not my favorite AI series, I ended up reading this book in a day. And I found myself chuckling more than once for silly things.

This time the story seemed to me much more settled in the field of science fiction, with all those trips from here to there, and the inn being more than ever a protagonist.

But one thing I guessed right away was the cause for the irrational hatred the Draziri feel for the Hiru.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

My rating: 2.5 gardening stars

This is fluffy and cute romance. A florist/gardener who can see ghost, and is following by them. Blue , the ghost, resigned in hopeless love. But some creepy darkness is stalking, menacing their peaceful existence.

I have some problems following the jumps of the story, and would be appreciated more details about the life and background of Hamal (is a nickname? ). And Blue.

This is the way the world ends...for the last time.

A season of endings has begun.
It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun.
It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter.
It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.
This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Broken-_Earth-_Face

I hate books without HEA, so I almost didn't finish this book. Too much drama is not my thing, but it was slowly capturing my interest, trying to proving my theories and understanding the worldbuilding. It's harsh and not forgiving.

In short: Tough protagonist. Strange powers. Earth shakes. Mysterious aliens objects. Diversity. And second person POV.
And maybe some XFiles-thingie

----------

BLURB: Artie Marshall is a scientist. She is perpetually underfunded, relegated to a damp basement, and besieged on all sides by sexist colleagues. Added to that she is immersed in a messy divorce. But she’s never been happier: she recently landed her own lab, based in an eclectic think-tank housed in the leafy suburbs of North London.Artie spends her days studying an obscure cat virus that nobody else in the world seems to have heard of – or cares about. But her arcane little research problem suddenly becomes worryingly relevant as local cats start dropping dead overnight. Matters get worse when people start getting infected too.Working with her right-hand man Mark, her vet friends and her street-smart technician, Artie races to get to the bottom of the ballooning epidemic. Unexpected assistance arrives in the form of two basement-dwelling mathematicians – a sociopathic recluse and his scary, otherworldly savant mentor. When their mathematical models suggest that the cat plague might actually be more sinister than it first appears, Artie gets drawn into a web of secrets and lies that threatens to blow apart her lab family, undermine her sanity – and endanger her own life.

Artemis Marshall is a promising young scientist working with viruses. If talking about VSN RNA , feline leukemia (FeLV), lentivirus, genome , and lab testing is not your thing , don't bother with this book.

Decent writting. However, the book suffers from a common flaw: try to cover too many issues at once and then rush to solving the end.

To the Isle of Bones in search of... answers ... a cure ... something , goes Maiko Halfwolf, Kippa and Master Ren. Despite the pirate company, and the deadly sirens, this is no neverland but rather imagine some obscure Verne's fantasy with some Inu imagery.

After all, do not tell me that using a ferryman to a place like these is not ominous.

Nope. Not at all.

Specially when everybody tells you tales of doom and gloom of the place. Nice of you of bringing back a necromancer, and a clever little cute fox.

Series:Britannia #2
Collecting BRITANNIA: WE WHO ARE ABOUT TO DIE #1-4.

BLURB: Valiant's critically acclaimed, 10-time sold-out magnum opus returns with a brand-new journey into myth and mystery, from comics master Peter Milligan (Shade, the Changing Man) and incendiary artist Juan Jose Ryp (Britannia!)
Fifty thousand Romans stand on their feet, watching from the rafters of the coliseum with captured breath as Achillia, a Gladiator unlike any that Rome has seen before, faces incredible odds - one lone warrior against five of Rome's greatest. Such is the tradition, when a female gladiator enters the fray. When the carnage is complete, the coliseum roars its approval as Achillia stands victorious. Now only one match away from winning her freedom, she has begun to gain renown.

The women of Rome, suppressed by their husbands and fathers, have noticed. The men of Rome, husbands and fathers to a growing horde of women entertaining ideas of independence, have noticed as well. On the other side of Rome, a strange mystery swirls through the Palatine Hill. In the dead of night, down winding alleys, Rome's elite swear that they see visions of a blood-soaked Apollo walking thecity...visions that are driving them mad. Even more are becoming sick with weird fever god-dreams. Panic ensues in the city. The Chief Vestal, Rubria, is arrested by Emperor Nero and threatened with crucifi xion unless the deadly curse that's fallen on Rome is lifted. She asks Antonius Axia, hero of Britannia and Rome's only detective, for help. She offers only one clue...the gladiator Achillia.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In Emperor Nero's times, we encounter the first 'detectioner' - Antonius Axia. This is my first view of this series, but is easy follow where this come from, as opposed to the messy current plot. The investigator is searching for some missing young noblemen , the rumor in the streets talk about the ire of the gods and blame the Vestals for their fail to protect them.

Between murders, suspected magical means, death threats, the raising of a son, feminist aspirations ... something is rotten in dear old Rome.

For a moment, Dharthi considered such medieval horrors as dentistry without anesthetic, binary gender, and being stuck forever in the body you were born in, locked in and struggling against what your genes dictated. The trap of biology appalled her; she found it impossible to comprehend how people in the olden days had gotten anything done, with their painfully short lives and their limited access to resources, education, and technology.
--------------

There are few, very few, books that let me at 'squeeee level'. Well, cough, this is one of them.

In Jane Yellowrock's New Orleans, the European Vamps have finally arrived. (well, funny factor here - Anita Blake old times nostalgia aside- they really arrived). As you can expect, bad-bad things occur almost simultaneously. There is a ton of action-packed scenes.

I'm really impresed when authors can show they thought their books way ahead; and the argumental arcs converged to leave you impressed.

1) Cherokee rituals.

2) Magiks, and angels, and scheming vampires, onorios, primos, emperors, and witches, and dragons, and Beast, and storms and rain.

3) And Alex and Eli:
I looked out into the living room. “I was thinking you could find and replace the fireplaces with gas ones.”
“No. Wood,” Alex said. “That way, when the zombie apocalypse comes we can have wood fire for heating and cooking.”
“When the apocalypse comes,” Eli corrected, “we’ll grab gobags and head for the hills. Some little holler Janie tells us about.”

3) Jane hit RickyBo.

4) Jane defends her love.

Even when those dreams get . . . deferred somehow.

Corrina shrugged. “Books,” she said. [...] She didn’t tell him about the thrill she felt when she first held a sword in her hand, first felt that honed edge slice the air in front of her. She didn’t tell him how good—how very, very good—it felt to be *dangerous*.
“Books, eh?” Her father chuckled. “Well, that’s something. I had no idea books were so dangerous.”
The word thrilled her to the core.

Recommended for: Cthulhu fans

The people of the water are born in shadow on the land, but what they make beneath the waves will live in glory till the dying sun burns away their last shelter.

Aphra Marsh is a survivor of interment camp. Her old town was Innsmouth.

For you, o not versed, Innsmouth is a fictional place of Lovecraftian horror. ( The Shadow Over Innsmouth )

More than a short story this is a sneek peak into the book of this author - Winter Tide . Takes place in the 1940s, after the war. Emrys (really??) narrate with Aphra, the other side of the people persecuted and stripped of family, legacy and religion. She is an Old Deep hybrid, with head down she lives following lost threads when able. Her tranquility is once more shattered when one man, Spector, ask her help with ... other people. Now, she is bitter, but then curious.

I'm not really sure how I feel about the comparation between the religion persecuted and culture persecuted and ... I don't know ...satanist? aliens pagans with human sacrifices? Actually, I do mind. But it's interesting.

The ending of this story -see here -is a bit weak. But I'm curious enough to look for the book.

Not as I was expecting. Seriously tempted to put just 2 stars to this book.

Journalist seeks to unmask a medium in Victorian London, the plot is complicated in a tangle of questioning for an inheritance.

Strangely, during the narration of the séance, I keep thinking in Houdini and his own obsession with spiritualism.

My problem with this book is that Nathaniel Roy -the journalist and former lawyer- is an uncharitable character, from a priveleged upbringing , he has never suffered hunger or despair to do everything to survive, but he feels with the right to judge others. In another hand, Justin Lazarus, the subject that deceives those who 'want to be deceived', is a character of gray morality, much more understandable; and I could sympathize with him.

The vision of London wrapped in a tangible fog where Justin manages to navigate is not very subtle, but convincing. I think they are not the type of couple that you expect to stay together for a long time, not with the way Nathaniel thinks.

Reseña: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (poesia)

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

by

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

22 pages
(first published 1798)
BLURB: The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner is a hauntingly beautiful work, acclaimed both for the lyrical quality of its language and for the ghostly atmosphere it evokes. Samuel Taylor Coleridge's masterpiece related the tale of a sailor who shoots a lucky albatross and is condemned to wander the sea in search of redemption, burdened with guilt over his deed and the resulting deaths of his shipmates.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An orphan's curse would drag to hell
A spirit from on high;
But oh! more horrible than that
Is the curse in a dead man's eye!

Christabel

by

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

5 pages
(first published 1816)
BLURB:  Christabel is a long narrative poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in two parts.

The story of Christabel concerns a central female character of the same name and her encounter with a stranger called Geraldine, who claims to have been abducted from her home by a band of rough men. Christabel pities her and takes her home with her; supernatural signs seem to indicate that not all is well.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

And Christabel awoke and spied
The same who lay down by her side—
O rather say, the same whom she
Raised up beneath the old oak tree!
Nay, fairer yet! and yet more fair!
For she belike hath drunken deep
Of all the blessedness of sleep!

Interesante.

BLURB: Ava is having a rough time. Getting rid of Venus didn’t set her free—she’s still part of the magical mafia called the Coterie. Her new boss seems like an improvement, but who knows if he’ll stay that way—the Coterie life changes people. And since Ava’s currently avoiding her friends after (disastrously) turning down a date with Lock, well, everything kind of sucks. And that’s not even taking into account the feelings she might have for him.

But when a mysterious illness starts to affect magical beings, it’s up to Ava and her team to stop its spread…or else one of them might be next.

My rating: 2.75 melting stars

Follows the weird and silly fashion of some episodes of Xena. This is an adventure starting with a major event -Gabrielle and Xena in big trouble- and asking the help of Ash Williams (from Army of Darkness).

When freeware network seems to put people really nervous.

Tsuyoshi Shimizu is living content with his pregnant wife and small business , when a errand takes a twist .

Tsuyoshi blinked. “I’m just living my life.”
“Well, your network gift economy is undermining the lawful, government approved, regulated economy!”
“Well,” Tsuyoshi said gently, “maybe my economy is better than your economy.”
“Says who?” she scoffed. “Why would anyone think that?”
“It’s better because we’re happier than you are. What’s wrong with acts of kindness? Everyone likes gifts.

Reseña: Prophets of the Ghost Ants (Antasy #1)

BILINGUAL REVIEW/Reseña Bilingue

by

Clark Thomas Carlton

608 pages
Published January 24th 2017 by Harper Voyager Impulse (first published June 17th 2011)
ISBN:0062429752 (ISBN13: 9780062429759)
Languaje: English

BLURB: Both familiar and fantastic, Clark T. Carlton’s Prophets of the Ghost Ants explores a world in which food, weapons, clothing, art—even religious beliefs—are derived from Humankind’s profound intertwining with the insect world.
In a savage landscape where humans have evolved to the size of insects, they cannot hope to dominate. Ceaselessly, humans are stalked by night wasps, lair spiders, and marauder fleas. And just as sinister, men are still men. Corrupt elites ruthlessly enforce a rigid caste system. Duplicitous clergymen and power-mongering royalty wage pointless wars for their own glory. Fantasies of a better life and a better world serve only to torment those who dare to dream.

One so tormented is a half-breed slave named Anand, a dung-collector who has known nothing but squalor and abuse. Anand wants to lead his people against a genocidal army who fight atop fearsome, translucent Ghost Ants. But to his horror, Anand learns this merciless enemy is led by someone from his own family: a religious zealot bent on the conversion of all non-believers . . . or their extermination.

A mix of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Shadow of the Apt, Katherine Addison’s The Goblin Emperor, and Phillip Pullman’s Golden Compass, this is a powerful new addition to the genre.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

{Note: If you are squeamish about bugs and eating bugs, this is so not your book ;P}
